What NGOs Can Contribute to Responding to Climate Change

The Side event on “Addressing Climate Change, NGOs are in Action” was successfully organized in China Pavilion on 15th November during the UN Climate Change Conference in Warsaw (COP19/CMP9), this side event addressed to the audience what roles Chinese NGOs have played and how they have contributed to the low carbon transition of China’s economy, panel discussion on how to gear up China’s low carbon transition through NGOs efforts, how to engage more people in action, how to strengthen capacity for NGOs were conducted during the meeting.


The chief negotiator of China delegation DG Su Wei pointed out in his opening remarks that NGOs are very important in China to help the government for policy making consultations, awareness raising, and action enhancing. Chinese government has been supporting NGOs to play more positive role in addressing climate change. Mr. Huang Haoming, the Executive Director of China Association for NGOs Cooperation (CANGO) illustrated the situation of policy development in China in supporting NGOs effective engagement in addressing climate change and how this facilitated NGOs campaign in China to promote the communication of climate science and low carbon lifestyle.


Mr. Bi Xinxin, the coordinator of China Civil Climate Action Network of CANGO, hosted the side event. Campaigners and practitioners from Green Zhejiang, Global Environmental Institute, Greenovation Hub, Brand China Union, Capital Normal University and All China Environmental Federation presented their vivid stories related to mitigate and adapt to climate change with local, national, and international perspectives. Panel discussion by experts from Climate Action Network (CAN), NRDC and C40 took pace during the second part of the event and the discussion inspired the audience in how NGOs could do more in terms of international. national and local influence and inform people with action against climate change.
Mr. Tian Chengchuan, the director of strategic research and planning division of climate change department from NDRC made conclusion remarks and extent thanks to all the NGOs who paid attention and contributed action to China and encouraged NGOs to play more and more positive roles in addressing climate challenge in China.
