Climate Change and Agriculture in England and Wales

This presentation briefly reviews the main impacts of climate change on agriculture in England and Wales. Considering the results from 3 DEFRA funded studies it examines the main changes that farmers may have to face in the future and the range of adaptation options open to them. Key effects will be upon the location, type and yield of future crops, but farmers will also have to adapt the timing of their farm operations and the levels and rate of machinery used. Some of these changes will require significant levels of investment in order both to mitigate climate change impacts and to take advantage of new opportunities.

However agricultural impacts cannot be considered in isolation from the impacts on other socio or economic sectors. The RegIS study provides an example of how agriculture will be affected by other sectors responses to climate change.

In understanding how to adapt agriculture to climate change, it is necessary also to consider farmers’ attitudes to change and their awareness of the implications of climate change. Information on climate change needs to be widely available both at the industry and individual farm level for efficient and effective adaptation to be adopted.
