Francois Hollande Hails US Climate Plan Ahead of Paris Conference
(2015-08-04)Calling it “a historic step” that has been undertaken by the Obama administration to tackle climate change, the Clean Power Plan is being considered as a landmark action that will protect public health, reduce energy bills for households and businesses, create jobs, and bring clean power to communities across the country.

The Home Performance Coalition supports the Clean Power Plan, which sets flexible standards for states to reduce carbon emissions.

In a video released by the White House, Mr Obama said the new limits were backed up by decades of data showing that without action the world faced more extreme weather and escalating health problems.

However, Steven Nadel, executive director of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), said, “EPA and the President have made it clear that investing in energy efficiency will be a major opportunity for states looking for ways to comply with the Clean Power Plan rule”.

“The Secretary-General appreciates President Obama’s strong, personal leadership on climate change”, he added.

“If we don’t do it, nobody will. The only reason that China is now looking at getting serious about its emissions is because they saw that we were going to do it, too”, he said.

Presently, carbon dioxide accounts for around 82% of US greenhouse gas emissions, with power plants that burn fossil fuels being the absolute largest source. “The nerdier way to say that is that we will be keeping 870 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution out of our atmosphere”.

“In December, with America leading the way, we have a chance to put in place one of the most ambitious global climate agreements in human history”, Obama said.

Also said Ban: “In all these conflict areas, it is the people whose human rights are being abused”.

Therefore, it will be up to Obama’s successor to implement his plan, and the prospect was dim as nearly all Republican presidential candidates were vocal in their opposition.

The White House says the plan will avoid up to 3,600 premature deaths, 90,000 asthma attacks in children, and 300,000 missed work and school days.

The Los Angeles Times reports California is one of them because it has “has practically eliminated coal from its energy portfolio and leads the nation with the toughest regulations to cut the greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet”.

Under the new plan, the White House would encourage a drastic shift from the use of coal towards renewable energy in generating electricity, setting the target for renewables’ share of electric generation at 28 percent of all capacity.
