(2016-03-14)What are you up to this Saturday evening?
If it’s nothing essential you can take part in an event that will be carried out across the planet with the noblest of causes – protecting its future.
It’s Earth Hour this weekend, the annual event which asks participants to go without light for an hour, in a display of solidarity, aiming to tackle climate change through raised awareness.
If you are a newcomer to this event, it’s actually set for its tenth anniversary, with the first edition taking place just in Sydney in 2007.
On a mass scale, it sees lights switched off on landmark buildings in the flagship countries taking part, think City Hall in London or Colosseum in Rome.
But everyone is encouraged to take part locally too, whether it is going without light for an hour at home or taking part in a locally organised event.
This year social media users have been asked to donate their Facebook posts or change their profile pictures.
The event takes place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm local time on Saturday.
in the UK, there are thousands of events taking place and you can use this postcode tracker to find out what is going on.
If you wanted to join in with friends and family, you can host a candlelit dinner for the hour and can download a starter pack from organisers WWF.
UK landmarks switching their lights off this year include Big Ben, The Ritz, The Gherkin, The Savoy, Oxo Tower, Old Trafford, Windsor Castle and Harrods.
