(2016-09-22)Morocco is strongly committed to implementing the Paris Agreement which will make the Marrakech conference the COP of action, said, on Wednesday in New York, COP22 president Salaheddine Mezouar.
The fact of depositing the instruments for the ratification of the Paris Agreement mirrors the firm commitment of Morocco to implement the said agreement, said Mezouar, also foreign minister, on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA, quoted in a statement by the COP22 steering committee.
HM King Mohammed VI entrusted me with the task of depositing Morocco’s instruments of ratification, he said, adding that this is a strong message for the international community all the more so because we have reached the threshold of 55 countries which have ratified the agreement ahead of the COP22 in Marrakech next November.
Mezouar called for continuing the mobilization, hoping to see the Paris Agreement come into force before the COP22.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon applauded in a speech the 29 countries which have already ratified the agreement, as well as the 31 new ones which have deposited their instruments on Wednesday.
For the enforcement of the Paris Agreement, 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions should deposit their instruments of ratification at the UN.
